Cracked Ruud’s card

Some time ago Ruud gave me his card he had just designed. I should take a look, he said. This is what’s on it:

I’ll save you the trouble. I all ready typed it all over, in hexadecimal instead of binary:

You’ll notice that there’s only \x30 and \x31 (note: lines are of odd length). My first guess while copying was something like a lot of ‘haha’ or ‘lol’, but that doesn’t fit. I all ready knew there wasn’t any real encryption algorithm, because any good encryption produces pseudo random data as does compression. So I did a quick replace 30 -> 0 and 31 -> 1 to see if I could recognize a pattern (and reformatted everything to 16 byte blocks). I all ready expected the data to be some bloated representation of binary data since there were only two different bytes.

I had now compressed the initial 1216bit of data to 152bit and it looked a lot more like text:

From this point on it’s fairly basic to grab a ASCII table and find “www.art-ificial.net”.
I also found that \x30 and \x31 actually are the 0- and 1-character in ASCII.

So what do I think?
Well blowing up your text in this kind of way isn’t really encryption. It’s a kind of barrier but not a real encryption. I had expected something basic like rot13. And more so, it’s stupid to try and encrypt your card. I mean it’s meant as a way to easily distribute your important contact data. Encryption doesn’t make it easy at all.
